GW Motorsport - Escort Cosworth
GW Motorsport run a winning 450bhp Ford Sierra Cosworth in the Dunlop Motorsport News Championship
The problems:
The engine was overheating during races, and heat was rising in the pits, before finally cooling down.
- Intake temperatures were reaching 50C
- Header tank was too hot to open
- The manifold, downpipe and turbo were causing heat problems in the engine bay
- The downpipe was causing gearbox temperatures to escalate
The solution:
Heat Dissipation coatings were applied to:
- Radiator
- Intercooler
Heat Containment coatings were applied to:
- Downpipe
- Manifold
The result:
- Engine temperature lowered from 100C to a constant 80C under race conditions.
- Engine temperature down to 50C after a warm-down lap. This temperature stayed constant whilst the car was stationary in the pits
- Header tank was cool enough to touch
- Header tank cap could be removed by hand for inspection
- Reduced gearbox oil temperature due to the elimination of heat soak from the downpipe
- Turbo spools up 200 rpm earlier
- Intake temperatures were reduced from 50C to 27C.
GW Motorsport reported being able to work on the car in the pits as soon as it returned, and that performance and reliability were both improved.
