How do they improve reliability?
Heat causes metals to expand, rubber and plastic to perish and melt, and oil to degrade. Channelling heat away from the engine via the exhaust helps maintain a constant temperature and lowers both the internal and external temperatures of the engine. Electrical systems, wiring harnesses, hoses and belts are all vulnerable to damage by heat, as are seals and gaskets - the failure of any one of these parts could be both dangerous and expensive.
